TRAININGS :: Land Navigation

Quick & Easy Land Navigation Training
Note: This training is designed to increase a team's familiarity with some basic land navigation skills. Though this exercise is not considered an advanced training in any one discipline, it can easily be adapted to be easier or harder depending on the instructor issuing the training guidelines.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE INSTRUCTOR

Minimal setup time is required. Obtain a location where a number of teams can be visually out of sight of one another. Divide your members into teams of 2 or 3. Provide them with a list of the instructions (below), a map of the training area with a scale, UTM or lat/long readings (or none if you want to change the training purposes), a simple marker flag, and standard SAR equipment (plus a GPS if so desired), a radio. Read the guidelines then set the teams in motion.

INSTRUCTIONS TO THE TEAMS

You and your team have the following objectives: (1) Wander off into the designated area, attempt to NOT see where other teams are going. Find a spot which is uniquely yours. (2) Mark on the map where you are; place your team's flag in the ground in a place not too easy to find, not too hard; write a note on the flag. (3) Take a GPs coordinate if you can, take bearings to identify your spot from visible clues or markers you can identify (more than one would be good). (4) Contact each other teams one at a time, obtain sufficient information to locate their flag.

Note: A GPs location is great if your team has a GPs If you do not have one, ask for some key land features which will get you in the vicinity of the flag. Use the map, its features, key trails, compass bearings as needed.

Key elements: use of radios and communication skills; use of map and general land feature descriptions; use of GPs and/or compasses to focus your search; use of standard POD and searching techniques.
