Understanding and Working with Canine Teams

Or "What To Do With Those Dogs!"
This information has been compiled in order to answer two simple questions that have complex answers:
CONTENTS
>>
The ground-pounders' question: What are my responsibilities as a member of a dog team on an assignment?
>>
An overhead team members' question: How do I use the dog team effectively?

Introduction
Within California there are a number of agencies that willingly provide their services under the Office of Emergency Services mutal aid plan. That means the crazy guys and gals with dogs are willing to drive for hours to help your team find someone. What a deal! The agencies in California are:
  • California Rescue Dog Association, Inc. (CARDA)
  • Wilderness Finders (WOOF)
  • Monterey Bay Search Dogs (MBSD)

These teams are available 24 hours a day, 365 day a year to respond to local, state, and federal law enforcement, as well as other specific public agency (park & fire department) requests. The handlers and their dog(s) are a team. The dogs are owned by the handlers; they train, certify and search together as a team. It’s not like 4H were handlers train puppies and then give them up.

In 2000, there were approximately 130 certified teams — and another 200 teams in training!
